The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) nationwide protest kicked off across the country amidst tight security on Tuesday.

Persecondnews gathered that the workers under the umbrella of the NLC hit the streets of Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Kano, with placards, mini vans, and loud speakers blaring songs in protest against what they called ‘hunger’ in the land.

Union members in Edo State assembled at the National Museum grounds in Benin City as early as 9:00 a.m. in preparation for the protest.

Persecondnews reports that the nationwide protests witnessed a heavy presence of security personnel in various states of the federation.

According to a report from Akwa Ibom, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, deployed 3,200 police officers across the state after a meeting with the state chapter of the NLC, affiliate bodies, and other union stakeholders.

In Kaduna State, scores of policemen escorted the protesters as they moved along Independence Way, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “workers’ rights are sacrosanct” and “let us unite in the struggle for the emancipation of the people.”

One of the major highlights of the protest in Lagos was the distribution of water and biscuits to the protesters.
