Senior lawyers and politicians will converge on Ere-Ijesa, in Osun State to discuss a lecture topic, “The Laws of God and the Laws of Man at the Intersection of Justice’’, to be delivered by Prof. Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun (SAN), the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).
The lecture is part of a reception fixed for Feb.5, 2022 in honour of Prince Adeleke Olaniyi Agbola, who has just been elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), an illustrious son of the town.
Osun Gov. Gboyega Oyetola is to preside at the reception/lecture with his cabinet members, the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Timothy Owoeye, members of State House of Assembly, and Mr Akande Oluwafemi, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice as well as prominent members of the state judiciary in attendance.
The event is being put together by Chams CEO, Sir Demola Aladekomo in conjunction with Elere of Ere-Ijesa, Oba Augustine Alowolodu and some friends of the new SAN, the second citizen of the town to bag the title.
The reception is also in recognition of Agboola’s installation as the Chancellor of Diocese of Ijesa North (Anglican Communion).
Persecondnews reports that SAN is a title that may be conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria of not less than ten years standing and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession. It is the equivalent of the rank of Queen’s Counsel in the United Kingdom, from which Nigeria became Independent in 1960.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria is said to have been admitted to the “Inner Bar” as distinguished from the “Outer” or “Utter” Bar, consisting of junior advocates. The conferment is made in accordance with Section 5 (1) of the Legal Practitioners Act by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee since 1975.
The event will be rounded off with a thanksgiving service at St. Stephens Church, Ere-Ijesa in Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State, according to a statement by the Planning Committee.
The committee members include Prof. Oluwabukola Oyawoye, former Commissioner for Environment in Osun State, Mr Oluwatise Adenipekun, a former Head of WAEC in Nigeria, Dr Gbenga Akingbehin, a law lecturer at University of Lagos, Dr Foluke Dada, a university don, Dr Oyewole Stephen Adekanye, CMD, Baptist Hospital, Saki and Dr Adebisi Alo, a lecturer at Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State.
Persecondews also recalls that Agboola was called to the Bar on 22nd October 1987. At the Nigerian Law School, he won the following academic Awards:Chief Richard Akinjide Prize in the Law of EvidenceHon. Justice Atanda Fatayi-Williams Prize in the Law of Evidence: Hon. Justice Jacob Sofolahan Prize in General Paper.
He joined the law firm of Cheakley Chambers in 1988 and became the Principal Partner in 1996. He has been involved in all aspects of legal practice including litigation across every geographical spread of Nigeria in diverse areas of Civil & Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Arbitration, maritime and Criminal Defence and Appeals.
He served as a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, International Bar Association, Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, Fellow, Institute of Voluntary Sector Management and Member, Lagos Court of Arbitration. He served as a Member, Technical and Administrative Review Panel on Domestic Airlines 2012 (established by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to restructure the airline industry following the crash of Dana Airline); member, Committee on Review of NCAA Act and All Bilateral Air Services Agreement, 2012, Assessor to the Nurses and Midwives Disciplinary Tribunal, 2006 (appointed by the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria) and Notary Public, 2012.
He is a member of the Judicial Relations Committee of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association.
