Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was toppled in the August 2020 military coup led by Col Assimi Goita has passed on.

His demise was announced in Bamako on Sunday. Keita was aged 76 years.

The cause of Keita’s death was not indicated. He resigned and was detained by the Goita regime, according to a report sent in by Paul Ejime to Persecondnews.com

He was later freed and allowed to travel to the United Arab Emirates on several occasions for medical treatment.

Soumaila Cisse, Keita’s opponent in the 2018 presidential election died in 2020 from Covid-19 after his release from abduction by armed groups in northern Mali.

ECOWAS has suspended Mali and slammed it with harsh and controversial financial and border blockage after the Goita-led announced a five-year delay of its transition timetable.
