…calls a halt, it’s unacceptable — Gbajabiamila
Piqued by inhuman treatment meted out to Nigerian nationals including students in China, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, has called a halt to it, saying it is unacceptable.
He said media reports and videos from Beijing, China, confirmed that Nigerians were being evicted from their houses and hotels, rounded up and their passports seized by the Chinese police.
Gbajabiamila spoke at a meeting he held with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Zhou Pingjian, in Abuja on the heels of the harassment and dehumanization of Nigerians in the country.
Attendees at the meeting included some principal officers — the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu and Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu.
Persecondnews had reported the intervention of the
Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian Mission in China and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
There was a face-off between the Head of the Nigerian Mission and Chinese authorities on Friday.
The Speaker, who confronted the Ambassador with a video showing a Nigerian challenging Chinese officials for treatment meted out to them in China, said the Chinese authorities should be addressed forthwith.
The videos also showed that some Nigerians who had undergone to a 14-day quarantine were also being forced to go into another 14 days of quarantine over the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in China.
“Inhuman and unlawful treatment of Nigerian citizens resident in the country is unacceptable to the government of Nigeria,’’ he said.
Gbajabiamila, therefore, demanded an official explanation from the Ambassador on the steps being taken by his home government to restore normalcy.
