A group of civil society organizations sympathetic to the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

The protesters demanded the inclusion of the party’s candidates in the forthcoming nationwide bye-elections, raising concerns about INEC’s handling of the party’s leadership crisis.

Carrying banners and placards with inscriptions such as “INEC, who is using you against LP” and “Mahmood stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,” the protesters gathered peacefully at the INEC headquarters, urging the commission to obey court orders and recognize the Abure-led faction as the legitimate leadership of the party.

This protest comes amid a deepening leadership crisis within the Labour Party, with the Abure-led faction rejecting the appointment of Sen. Nenadi Usman as interim national chairman.

The party’s internal conflict has sparked concerns about its ability to participate in upcoming elections.
