In a major win for Nigerian sports, Silas Agara, President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), has been elected as the 4th Vice President of the Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK).
The election, held on Wednesday night, July 23, 2025, was part of UFAK’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The meeting took place alongside the 2025 African Karate Championship at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium’s Velodrome.
Agara secured a decisive victory, receiving 20 votes to defeat his closest competitor, Freddy Kombo of Congo DRC, who garnered 14 votes.
This win is a reward to Agara’s leadership and the respect he commands in the African karate community.
As Vice-President of Region 2 (West Africa), Agara’s experience and knowledge of the region likely played a significant role in his election.
The UFAK AGM saw the emergence of new leadership, with Souleymane Gaye of Senegal elected as the new President, securing 23 votes to defeat Mohammed Mouktabil of Morocco, who garnered 11 votes.
Other key positions were filled by Bechir Cherif of Tunisia, who was elected unopposed as the 1st Vice-President, and Sonny Pillar of South Africa, who emerged as the 3rd Vice-President without opposition. Bertin Dongmo from Cameroon was elected unopposed as the General Secretary.
The UFAK AGM was held alongside the ongoing 2025 African Karate Championship, which features 31 countries competing at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
The championship, which started on July 21, is expected to conclude on July 28.
The event is being closely watched by the global karate community, with the World President of the Karate Federation, Antonio Espinos, in attendance.
