Nigeria has achieved a historic first at the African Junior Championships, becoming the first nation ever to sweep the women’s 100m podiums in both the U18 Girls’ and U20 Women’s categories.
This dominant performance saw Nigerian athletes claim all three medals in each final.
In the U18 Girls’ final, Miracle Ezechukwu led the charge, winning gold with a blazing time of 11.88 seconds.
Her training partner, Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo, secured the silver medal in 11.96 seconds, while Mariam Jegede rounded out the Nigerian triumph with a bronze in 12.20 seconds, narrowly beating out South Africa’s Oluchi Ndubueze.
Persecondnews reports that the U20 Women’s final, Chioma Cynthia Nweke pulled away from the field to win gold in 11.65s, with Success Oyibu taking silver in 11.78s.
This dominance showcases the depth of Nigerian sprinting talent.
The championships also saw exciting performances in other events, including the mixed 4x400m relay, where Nigeria took a gold in a thrilling finish, and the 1500m and 3000m races, where athletes from Uganda, Kenya, and Morocco excelled.
