President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit, following a successful week-long state visit to Saint Lucia.

During his visit to Saint Lucia, Tinubu met with the island nation’s leaders, including Governor General Cyril Errol Charles and Prime Minister Philip Pierre.

He also addressed a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Senate and House of Assembly at Sandals Grande, reiterating the importance of cooperation with Saint Lucia and member nations of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Tinubu’s engagements in Saint Lucia included a high-level working luncheon with OECS leaders, where discussions centered on deepening economic cooperation and cultural exchange between Nigeria and the Caribbean nations.

The Nigerian leader also visited the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries to promote academic collaboration and reinforce educational links between Nigerian and Caribbean institutions.

Prime Minister Philip Pierre saw Tinubu off at Hewanorra International Airport as he departed for Brazil.

As a ‘partner country,’ Tinubu will join leaders from fast-growing economies at the BRICS Summit, scheduled for July 6-7, 2025.

Nigeria’s participation reflects its growing role in global diplomacy and economic cooperation.

The summit’s theme, “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” highlights the importance of collaboration among developing nations.

Other African leaders attending the summit include those from Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa, which are full members of BRICS.

The BRICS Summit will prioritize discussions on global South-South collaboration and sustainable development, with a focus on social, economic, and environmental development priorities.

The summit comes against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s tariff threat, underscoring the need for strengthened trade and technology exchange within the BRICS bloc.
