Senate Demands Increased Military Presence in Yelewata, Benue, After Bloodshed

Following the June 13 massacre in Yelewata, Benue State, the Senate on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to deploy additional troops to the area and other affected communities in the state without delay to restore law and order.

Persecondnews had reported that at least 200 villagers were killed in horrendous terrorist attacks.

The Senate also called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice while strongly condemning all acts of mass violence against innocent Nigerians.

Additionally, the Senate has urged the Federal Government to reconstruct destroyed properties, and compensate for significant losses.

While commending President Bola Tinubu for directing the establishment of a stakeholders’ committee to promote peace in Benue State, the Senate observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the massacre.

The Upper Chamber also hailed President Tinubu for encouraging the establishment of ranches as a permanent solution to the herders and farmers’ conflicts across the country.

These resolutions were passed following a motion titled “Urgent Need for the Federal Government to Deploy More Troops to Yelewata and Other Affected Communities of Benue State to Restore Law and Order,” moved by Sen. Titus Zam (APC-Benue North West).

In his presentation, Zam said the Senate was deeply concerned about the “dastardly attack on the peaceful community of Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, which occurred on the night of 13 June 2025, resulting in the tragic killing of over 200 innocent civilians, including women and children.”
