Omolola Tobiloba Akinsanmi has etched her name in history at the “Gateway Games” National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, becoming the first athlete to secure a gold medal in swimming.

Representing Ogun State, Tobiloba delivered a stunning performance in the 800-meter freestyle event, claiming the top spot on the podium and a cash prize of N2.5 million.

This reward is part of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s promise to incentivize the state’s contingent: N2.5 million for every gold medal, N1.5 million for silver, and N1 million for bronze.

Tobiloba’s historic win makes her the first athlete from the home team to claim this N2.5 million gold prize.

Persecondnews reports that the young swimmer, who recently returned from the United Kingdom to compete for her home state, delivered an impressive display of speed and endurance.

Despite starting the race in third place, Tobiloba’s strategic buildup and mental resilience proved to be the keys to her victory.

“The 800 is a very long event, so I had to prepare mentally,” she said.

“Even though I started in third, I kept telling myself, ‘I’m ready. I’m going to win this.’ At the halfway mark, I pushed harder and started gaining speed. I said to myself, ‘I’m going to get this gold’ and I did.”

Tobiloba’s emotional win was a testament to her personal determination and courage.

“The challenge is mostly mental,” she revealed. “My body was hurting, but I told myself, ‘I’ve trained for this moment.’

“I kept striving, and when I touched the wall, all the pain just disappeared.” Her inspiring journey from pain to podium proves that with the right mindset, anything is possible.”

The historic win has marked Tobiloba as a rising star in Nigerian sports, and she is already focused on what comes next.

“I’m going to break the record,” she declared. “I’ll get more medals and keep believing in myself.”

Her performance at the Gateway Games has set the pace for the rest of the swimming events, and fans will be eagerly anticipating her next appearance in the pool.
