Ogun Gov. Fires Up Gateway Games with N2.5m Gold Medal Winners Pledge

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has sweetened the stakes for the state’s athletes competing in the upcoming National Sports Festival, which begins today.

He pledged a substantial cash prize of N2.5 million for every gold medal secured.

Persecondnews correspondent at the camp, reports that in addition to the top prize, Abiodun also announced rewards of N1.5 million for each silver medal and N1 million for every bronze medal won by Ogun State participants.

The governor conveyed this exciting news during his visit to the Athletics Camp located at Babcock University in Ilisan-Remo in the Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

He urged the athletes to make the state proud, saying, “You are not here to compete alone, but to win. We are hosting to win, and you must bring the medals home.”

According to the governor, the state is known for producing world-class sportsmen and women who have made the nation proud.

He appreciated the athletes for displaying exemplary character in serving their motherland and assured them that the state has provided the necessary infrastructure and facilities for a seamless competition.

Abiodun noted that the state’s investment in sports infrastructure is strategic, saying “We have made available the infrastructure and facilities that have become the reference point in sports in Nigeria.

“Our newly renovated International Sports Arena in Abeokuta will be hosting international competitions, and we are working to develop the sports economy in Ogun State.”

The governor also urged the athletes to cooperate with officials, acknowledging that minor challenges may arise during the competition.

“A competition of such magnitude cannot be 100 percent free from hiccups,” he said, assuring that the challenges would be addressed.

In addition to the medal rewards, Abiodun promised each participating athlete N50,000 within 24 hours, saying, “Anyone who wins a medal will receive an instant award, a huge one.”
