Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, has taken a significant step towards qualifying for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, thrashing Algeria 4-0 in the first leg of their final qualifying round match.

The match, held at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Saturday, saw the Flamingos dominate from the onset.

Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the third minute, and just 10 minutes later, Raji doubled the lead.

Joseph bagged her brace before halftime, giving Nigeria a comfortable 3-0 advantage.

In the dying moments of the match, Animashaun sealed the emphatic win with a 90th-minute strike.

The Flamingos will now travel to Algeria for the second leg on April 25 at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida.

A win or a draw in the return leg will secure their spot in the World Cup.

Under the guidance of head coach Bankole Olowookere, the team has shown impressive form, dismantling South Africa 5-1 on aggregate in the previous round.

The U-17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 8, will feature five teams from Africa, including the host nation.

With their commanding win, the Flamingos have sent a strong message to their opponents, showcasing their determination to make a mark in the tournament.
