Morocco has claimed its first-ever U-17 Africa Cup of Nations title, defeating Mali 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw in the final match held at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.

The young Atlas Lions showcased their skills and composure in the shootout, with goalkeeper Chouaib Bellaarouche making two outstanding saves to secure the win.

The 90-minute match was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities but failing to capitalize on them.

Mali thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half via Soumaila Fane, but the goal was correctly ruled out by VAR for handball.

Morocco’s Ziyad Baha had a promising chance shortly before halftime, but Mali goalkeeper Lamine Sinaba made a sublime save.

Despite Mali’s strong start to the second half, the deadlock remained unbroken at full time.

In the penalty shootout, Morocco demonstrated exceptional composure, converting all four of their spot kicks with confidence.

Ilies Belmokhtar sealed the win with a stylish ‘Panenka’ penalty, sending the home supporters into raptures.

Mali’s Issa Koné and Lamine Keita had their efforts saved by Bellaarouche, handing the title to the jubilant hosts.

Persecondnews reports that with this win, Morocco joins Mali, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt, and Uganda as qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Qatar in November.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for Moroccan football, ending a long wait for continental glory at this level.
