The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Football Association has expressed grief over the loss of Christian Chukwu, the legendary captain of Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON-winning team, who passed away at the age of 74 at his country home Enugu on Saturday, April 12.

FCT FA Chairman Adam Mouktar Muhammed, in a statement on Wednesday signed by Mrs. Uche Hillary, Head Media Committee of the association, expressed his heartfelt condolences to Chukwu’s family and the Nigeria football family, describing his demise as a great loss to football and sports in general.

“Nigeria has lost a gem. A hero. A man who many see as an embodiment of strength, character, and goals,” Muhammed said.

“He was very dedicated to sports growth and development all his lifetime. He will surely be missed.” Chukwu’s legacy extends beyond his playing career, as he went on to coach Enugu Rangers and the Nigerian national team, leading them to notable achievements.

Persecondnews recalls that Chukwu’s playing career was marked by notable achievements, including winning bronze medals at the 1976 and 1978 AFCON finals. He led the Nigerian team to victory in the 1980 AFCON, held on home soil, and was named Player of the Tournament.

After retiring from active football, Chukwu served as coach of the Kenyan national team, the Harambee Stars, and later returned to Nigeria to coach the Super Eagles.

The FCT FA Chairman prayed that Almighty Allah grant Chukwu’s soul eternal rest and grant his family and friends the fortitude to bear this great loss.

“All we can say is that we pray that Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest, grant his family and friends, and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear this great loss,” he said.
