In a significant blow to fuel smugglers, about 125,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), valued at ₦125 million, has been seized in Kebbi State by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Persecondnews reports that this massive seizure, carried out under ‘Operation Whirlwind’, marks the largest fuel bust since the initiative began.

According to the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, ACG Hissaini Ejibunu on Tuesday, fuel smuggling poses a significant economic threat, contributing to revenue losses, artificial scarcity, and security risks.

“Fuel smuggling is a major economic threat, and we are committed to dismantling these smuggling networks,” Ejibunu said.

The confiscated fuel was packed in 4,375 jerrycans of 25 litres each and 54 drums of 200 litres.

The trucks carrying the fuel were registered in the Republic of Benin and had been under surveillance before officers intercepted them in Tsamiya.

The success of the operation was attributed to the collaboration between the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi commended the officers’ vigilance and thanked the National Security Adviser, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, for his role in the broader fight against economic crimes.

Adeniyi urged Nigerians to support Customs’ anti-smuggling efforts by reporting suspicious activities.

“This operation proves the strength of inter-agency collaboration. We remain committed to dismantling smuggling networks and holding economic saboteurs accountable,” Adeniyi said.

The Customs Area Controller for Kebbi Command, Compt. Chidi Chukwumeziri Nwokorie, assured that the crackdown on smuggling will continue with renewed intensity, while also ensuring that legitimate traders are facilitated to conduct lawful trade in compliance with existing regulations.
