No more bad blood: Wizkid, Don Jazzy reunite after rift

1.7k

The tension that generated a lot of dust last year between Nigerian music star Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, and Mavin Records founder, Michael Collins Ajereh, better known as Don Jazzy on social media, may have now been put to rest as they confirmed that they have fully buried the hatchet.

A video had captured both industry giants together; engaging warmly and sharing a hug, signaling that whatever misunderstandings may have existed between them are now in the past.

The clip, which quickly gained traction online, showcased a lighthearted moment between Wizkid and Don Jazzy, dispelling any lingering rumours of a feud.

Fans and industry watchers have taken this as confirmation that there is no more bad blood between the two.

Recall that speculation about tension between them began when Wizkid took to his X account to interact with fans, where his attention was drawn to a post by Mavin signee Ladipoe.

The rapper had stated that Afrobeats was undergoing its “Afrobeats is dead” phase, similar to how Hip Hop once faced the “Hip Hop is dead” narrative—a phrase Wizkid had previously contributed to.

In response, Wizkid made a cryptic remark, saying he would never have a conversation with any artiste signed by an “influencer.”

Many interpreted this as a veiled jab at Don Jazzy, the head of Mavin Records, labeling him as an “influencer” rather than a record executive.

The comment sparked widespread debate, with fans and observers criticising Wizkid for what seemed to be an attempt to undermine Don Jazzy’s role in the industry.

However, Don Jazzy chose not to engage in any public rebuttal. Instead, he later thanked Wizkid on social media after the Grammy-winning artiste shared the streaming link to Mavin signee Ayra Starr’s sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21.

In June 2024, Wizkid further quelled speculations about any lingering issues between them when he publicly referred to Don Jazzy as an “amazing human,” signaling a shift towards reconciliation.

Now, with the two stars sharing a moment together on video, their reunion has put any doubts to rest.

Fans have taken to social media to celebrate the resolution, with many praising the maturity of both men for moving past the controversy and embracing a sense of unity in the Nigerian music industry.

Beyond the reunion, Wizkid’s recent moves suggest he is making a conscious effort to reconnect with his Nigerian roots and solidify his influence on the local scene.

The singer has openly stated that he is “back home for good,” a declaration that hints at his renewed commitment to the Nigerian music industry.
