Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced a significant overhaul of the Senate’s committees’ leadership, appointing new chairmen for key development commissions and reshuffling various standing committees.
The reshuffle came on Tuesday after the Senate resumed from a two-week recess.
Akpabio commended lawmakers for their dedication during the 2025 budget defence sessions, acknowledging their hard work while announcing the appointments of new chairmen and deputy chairmen to oversee three key commissions.
“Sen. Babangida Hussaini and Sen. Muntari Dandutse will serve as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on the North West Development Commission (NWDC).
“Similarly, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu and Sen. Kenneth Eze have been appointed as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Committee on the South East Development Commission(SEDC), while Sen. Titus Zam and Sen. Isa Jibrin will head the Committee on the North Central Development Commission(NCDC),” he said.
The Senate also reshuffled some standing committees, moving Sen. Abdul Ningi from the Population Committee to chair the Committee on FERMA.
It also moved Sen. Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, formerly in charge of the Local Content Committee, to lead Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations.
Sen. Garba Maidoki will lead the  Committee on Sports Development, and Sen. Joel Thomas, will take the reins as Chairman of the Committee on Local Content.
Sen. Victor Umeh was reassigned to lead the Committee on National Population and NIMC, having previously chaired the Diaspora Committee.
The Senate extended heartfelt condolences to the Speaker of the House of Representatives over the passing away of Rep. Oriyomi Onanuga, former Deputy Majority Whip, on January 15.
The Senate President led lawmakers in observing a minute of silence in Onanuga’s honour before adjourning plenary.
