A massive fire swept through the Mpape New Market in Abuja on Friday, unleashing widespread devastation and leaving vendors in a state of distress.
The blaze razed over 40 shops, incinerating goods valued at a staggering more than N60 million.
The market, once a bustling hub of commercial activity, was reduced to smoldering ruins, with vendors counting their losses and struggling to come to terms with the disaster.
According to a trader, who spoke to Persecondnews correspondent, the fire, which started about 5:25 pm, caught traders off guard, leaving them to watch their livelihoods going up in flames.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but what is clear is that this is not an isolated incident.
Just last week, a similar fire outbreak occurred in the Karimo market, destroying goods worth millions of naira.
Incessant fire raises serious questions about the safety and security measures in place in these markets.
Persecondnews reports that the swift response of the Fire Service and the Nigerian Police Force helped to contain the fire but stakeholders said “it is a case of too little, too late.”
