The immediate past National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, has expressed joy over the release and return to Nigeria of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, the former Deputy Senate President.

Persecondnews reported earlier today that Ekweremadu was released on Tuesday, and is currently in Abuja.

Her release is said to have sparked jubilation in her family house in the Mpu community of Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Ogbonnia praised Sen. Ekweremadu, describing him as a nation builder who made significant contributions to the development of Enugu West and Enugu State during his tenure as a senator, a position he held from 2003 to 2023.

He said: “I want to thank God for His grace upon Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife. It’s jubilation galore across Enugu State because they used their opportunities to touch lives, showcasing the quality they possess.

“The husband, in particular, represented the people of Enugu West immeasurably and impacted Enugu State as a whole. We pray that in no distant time, he will return to Nigeria to continue his good work.”

In the same vein, the former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) and ex-governor of Enugu State, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo, was also overjoyed over her release.

Nwodo described her freedom as a significant relief for her family and the entire Southeast region.

He noted that her return to Nigeria would also help alleviate the loneliness her children endured during her incarceration.

“I am happy for the children because one of the parents is now out to look after them.”

Persecondnews recalls that Justice Jeremy Johnson of the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court convicted Sen. Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr. Obinna Obeta, who were subsequently sentenced to prison by a UK court for their involvement in organ harvesting in 2023.

They were convicted for attempting to buy a kidney from a young Nigerian boy, David Nwamini to donate to their daughter, Sophia Ekweremadu.

This was the first conviction under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.

The former deputy senate president was sentenced to 10 years, while his wife was sentenced to six years.
