Following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa earlier on Monday, the Lagos State House of Assembly has elected Mrs. Mojisola Meranda as its first female Speaker, marking a significant milestone in the state’s legislative history.
Taking her oath of office, Meranda said: “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Persecondnews had reported that the 40-member legislature impeached Obasa for what they called corruption, financial mismanagement, gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Obasa has been in the news for allegedly spending N17 billion on the assembly complex gate among others.
In December 2024, the State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of which President Bola Tinubu is a member, had invited the impeached speaker to appear before it over alleged public insubordination and confrontation to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu during his budget presentation to the lawmakers.
Obasa is the second speaker of the House to be removed since the inception of democratic rule in 1999.
Persecondnews recalls that in December 2005, Speaker Jokotola Pelumi, a lawyer, from Epe II, was impeached during the administration of the then Gov. Bola Tinubu now President.
Mr. Adeyemi Kuforiji also from Epe 1 constituency was elected as replacement.
The impeachment brought to an end the two-and-a-half-year reign of Pelumi who has had to contend with series of allegations including maladministration and corruption.
