South Korea Mourns as Plane Crash Death Toll Reaches 85, Two Pulled Alive

1.6k

A tragic plane crash occurred at Muan International Airport in southwestern South Korea on Sunday, resulting in the loss of at least 85 lives.

Unfortunately, hopes are fading for the remaining passengers and crew, with many presumed dead in the devastating disaster.

The Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members from Bangkok, crash-landed on the runway and burst into flames.

According to officials, the accident was caused by a landing gear malfunction. Footage of the crash showed the plane sliding on its belly at high speed, hitting an earthen embankment, and erupting in a fireball.

The victims include 39 males and 46 females, with two Thai nationals among those on board.

Miraculously, two crew members, one male and one female, were pulled alive from the crash site. However, rescuers have warned that there is little hope of finding further survivors.

The South Korean government has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, with officers from the Incident Investigation Committee arriving at the scene.

South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, has instructed emergency responders to mobilize all available equipment and personnel to respond to the crash.

The tragedy comes amid a time of political chaos in South Korea, with Choi having only been in the job of acting president since Friday.

Jeju Air has replaced its website’s homepage with a statement following the crash-landing, apologizing for causing concerns and providing numbers to call for information about family members on board.

The airline has promised to make every effort to respond to the accident.
