For their outstanding dedication to employees’ well-being, the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) and the Maritime Workers Association of Nigeria (MWUN) have lauded the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho.

The unions’ commendation was sparked by Oyetola’s instrumental role in securing approval for the NPA to conduct promotion examinations, thereby resolving the long-standing issue of employee stagnation.

Persecondnews reports that this move has been hailed as a significant milestone, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to meritocracy and career advancement.

The NPA in a post on its official X handle on Friday stated that Comrade Akinola Bodunde, President of SSASCGOC, expressed the unions’ gratitude, highlighting the increase in productivity bonuses, prioritization of staff welfare, and the review of the Financial Guide to the Condition of Service.

These initiatives have comprehensively addressed the workers’ concerns, providing a much-needed boost to their livelihoods amidst inflationary pressures.

Dr. Dantsoho praised the swift resolution of recent issues, crediting Minister Oyetola’s unwavering support and the Executive Management Team’s cooperation.

He also applauded Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), for his professionalism in maintaining industrial harmony.

This recognition follows the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) report, which highlighted a significant trade surplus for Q2 and Q3 2023.

The surplus was largely driven by improved export transactions facilitated through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), with total exports increasing by 60.78% in Q3 2023 compared to the previous quarter.

Persecondnews recalls that Nigeria recorded a trade surplus of N1.89trn in the third quarter of 2023, which is higher than the N1.25trn recorded in the preceding quarter.

Total trade was N18.8tn, an increase of 54.66% and 53.16% over the N12.74tn and N12.28tn recorded in Q2 2023 and Q3 2022 respectively.

Total exports grew to N10.35tn, up by 60.78% compared to the amount recorded in the second quarter of 2023 (N6.43tn) and up by 74.36% when compared to the corresponding quarter in 2022 (N5.93tn).

In the Q3 of 2024 National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed a trade surplus of N5.81trn in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024.

Total merchandise trade was N35.16trn, an increase of 13.3% over the value recorded in Q2 2024 and up significantly by 81.4% compared to the value recorded in Q3 2023.

Total exports grew to N20.49trn, representing 58.3% of total trade and an increase of 16.8% & 98% from N17.55trn & N10.35trn recorded in Q2 2024 & Q3 2023, respectively.
