Nigeria’s Super Eagles concluded their Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifiers on a sour note, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Despite securing their spot in AFCON 2025, the Super Eagles were expected to dominate the match.

However, Rwanda’s resilience paid off as they came from behind to secure a stunning victory.

Persecondnews sports correspondent covering the qualifiers reports that the match began on a cautious note, with both teams squandering opportunities to take control in the first half.

The goalless stalemate was eventually broken in the 59th minute when Samuel Chukwueze gave Nigeria the lead, sending the home crowd into rapturous jubilation.

Rwanda responded swiftly, with Aimable Mutinzi equalizing in the 72nd minute.

The visitors’ momentum continued to build, and Nshuti sealed the win for Rwanda, capitalizing on Nigeria’s defensive lapses.

Nigeria’s early dominance in the second half faltered, allowing Rwanda to take advantage.

Nshuti’s heroics earned him a booking for time-wasting, but his goal proved decisive.

The defeat did little to dampen Nigeria’s qualification celebrations, as they topped Group D with 11 points from three wins, two draws, and one loss.

Benin and Rwanda finished with 8 points, but Benin secured second place on goal difference to join Nigeria in the tournament proper.

Libya finished at the bottom of the group with 5 points.

The Super Eagles’ focus now shifts to the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco, where they will aim to make a deep run.
