Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, secured a quarter-final spot in the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a resounding 4-0 victory over Ecuador on Saturday.
The Flamingos, who finished third in the previous edition, demonstrated their prowess with eight goals scored and only one conceded in their first two matches.
In the 26th minute, Shakirat Moshood opened scoring from the penalty spot following a foul on Captain Taiwo Afolabi in the box.
Peace Effiong and Harmony Chidi squandered scoring opportunities in the first half, but Chidi broke through in the 54th minute with a cleverly placed shot.
Effiong soon followed up with her first goal of the tournament, capitalizing on a faulty clearance.
Moshood sealed the win with her second goal in added time, assisted by Chidi.
The Flamingos face host nation Dominican Republic on Tuesday night in their final group phase encounter.
