Seized by a murderous rage, some soldiers attached to the Ojo Cantonment Barracks in Lagos have allegedly bumped off a policeman, preventing a soldier from driving against traffic.

They fatally stabbed Saka Ganiyu, a policeman, at the Volkswagen Bus Stop in the Ojo-Iyana Iba Road neighbourhood of Lagos.

Policemen on enforcement duty at Volks Bus Stop stopped the soldier, who was not wearing his uniform, as he drove an unregistered T4 Volkswagen commercial bus against the flow of traffic.

The soldier, angered by the policemen’s actions, had an altercation with them and then reached out to some of his colleagues, who reportedly stormed out of the Ojo Cantonment Barracks and attacked the policemen.

A document chronicling the circumstances surrounding the soldiers’ attack on the policemen indicated that Ganiyu sustained varying degrees of injury during the attack and was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for urgent treatment.

“However, the injured Inspector (Saka Ganiyu) later died in the hospital while undergoing treatment. The corpse was deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.

“Meanwhile, the Commander 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment, has been contacted, and the erring soldier was taken into custody at their base,” the document read.

Lagos Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Benjamin Hundenyin, has yet to comment on the incident.

Reacting, the spokesman for the 81 Division Nigerian Army, Olabisi Ayeni,  said: “Let me do my findings and get back to you.”
