August 1 protest: Senate recalls senators from recess, holds emergency session July 31

Amid threats of nationwide protests on August 1, the Senate has recalled senators from recess and scheduled an emergency session for Wednesday, July 31.

A memo from the Clerk/Permanent Secretary of the Senate stated that Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio had ordered an emergency plenary sitting.

It reads: “Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed.

“We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause. Thanks for your usual.”

Persecondnews reported that some Nigerians have scheduled a nationwide protest on August 1 against the prevailing economic hardship and hunger.
