The United Nations (UN) has strongly denounced the recent devastating suicide bombings that targeted innocent civilians in Gwoza, a local government area in Borno State.

On Saturday, June 29, a devastating series of attacks occurred in Gwoza, a town near the border with Cameroon, leaving at least 18 people dead and many more injured.

The assaults, allegedly carried out by female suicide bombers, targeted a wedding celebration, a hospital, and a funeral procession, causing widespread harm and destruction in the area.

The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident on Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, vehemently condemned the attacks, expressing his utmost horror and outrage at the devastating incidents.

He said: “I am horrified by this attack on civilian populations and condemn such acts in the strongest terms. I stand in solidarity with the government of Nigeria and the families and communities of all those affected.”

He reaffirmed the United Nations’ steadfast commitment to providing support and assistance to those affected by the attacks and extended his heartfelt condolences to the Borno State Government and the families of the victims.

He added: “I have reached out to the Borno State Government to express my condolences and offer any support that the United Nations and the humanitarian community can provide to aid the victims of the attack.”
