The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared its support for the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Persecondnews recalls that labor unions launched an indefinite strike on Monday, June 3, 2024, after the Federal Government failed to meet their demands for a new minimum wage, leading to a breakdown in negotiations.

In a statement on Monday, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU President, directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the Congress.

The statement emphasized the need for solidarity with the labor unions in their struggle for a fair minimum wage and the reversal of the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

The action followed the Federal Government’s inability to conclude the re-negotiation of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers, despite agreements reached in previous negotiations.

The labor unions have criticized the government for neglecting workers’ well-being and disregarding their calls for a fair and equitable wage, leading to a deepening impasse in negotiations.

By joining the strike, ASUU is demonstrating its commitment to the struggle for better working conditions and fair compensation for all Nigerian workers.

The union’s support will intensify the strike, pressuring the government to meet labor demands and potentially disrupting university activities nationwide.

He said:”Students and parents are advised to closely monitor the situation, as the strike may disrupt academic calendars.”

The ASUU called on the government to act quickly to address labor demands and prevent further economic and academic disruptions.
