Nigeria’s Armed Forces have begun a three-day national mourning for the 17 soldiers killed by angry youths in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, on March 14.
Also, to commemorate the loss of the heroic personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, flags are flying at half-mast across all military installations nationwide, symbolizing respect and mourning.
Persecondnews recalls that some youths had shot and killed an Army commander, two majors, a captain, and 12 soldiers who were on a peace mission to Okuoma, a town in Delta State’s Ughelli South Local Government Area.
The soldiers and officers were reported to have been deployed from the 181 Amphibious Batallion in the Delta’s Bomadi Local Government Area.
The community has since been deserted by locals over fear of reprisal attacks by the military, which is actively searching for the culprits.
