The Falconets, Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s football team, thrashed their Senegalese opponents 4-0 on Monday in the second Group B match of the 13th African Games, which are currently taking place in Ghana.

The Falconets defeated Senegal 4 goals to 1 in the game that was contested at Cape Coast Stadium, securing their spot in the All Africa Games women’s championship semifinals, reports Persecondnews.

To surpass Senegal, they needed goals from Loveth Edeh, Motunrayo Ezekiel, Chioma Olise, and one own goal. Edeh gave Falconets the lead in the fourteenth minute.

Senegalese forces retaliated, but they were unable to break through Nigeria’s strong defense.

Ezekiel extended Nigeria’s advantage five minutes into the second half when she pounced on a breakaway, sprinted into the Senegalese goal area, and found the back of the net.

After the Senegalese were under siege from the Nigerian forwards for a minute, Aiche Kalas scored an own goal when she unintentionally put the ball in her own net.

Nigeria scored their fourth goal in the 81st minute thanks to a goal from forward Oliseh.

With the victory, the Falconets—who had taken six points from their first two games without giving up a goal—have now guaranteed a spot in the African Games women’s football semifinals.

The girls under Christopher Danjuma’s leadership entered the game full of confidence after winning 2-0 over Morocco in their opening game on March 8.

Group B includes Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, and Nigeria, the reigning champions. Group A comprises hosts Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Falconets won the gold medal at the 12th African Games’ women’s football competition, which was held in Rabat, Morocco, in 2019.

The Games which began on March 8 and running until March 23 are being hosted in three cities: Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.
