NUPRC to relocate staff, some units from Abuja to Lagos

In its bid to deliver efficient service, the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has started the process of relocating certain departments to Lagos.

In a memo titled “Movement to Lagos,” dated February 14, signed by Dr. Kelechi Ofoegbu, Executive Commissioner, Economic Regulation and Strategic Planning of NUPRC, the development is aimed at utilizing its assets in Lagos.

The statement reads: “In line with our objectives of improving organizational efficiency, industry growth, and managing office accommodation in Abuja, we are exploring the possibility of relocating certain units to Lagos.

“This initiative is driven by the need to enhance our service delivery, reduce operational costs, and make adequate utilization of our assets in Lagos.”

Persecondnews reports that heads of departments have been directed to identify and provide a list of units that can operate independently with minimal supervision.

A few days after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced plans to permanently relocate some key departments from Abuja headquarters to Lagos, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also followed suit.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, dismissed rumors of relocating the Federal Capital from Abuja to Lagos with the recent relocation of key federal government agencies and departments.

He highlighted the commercial significance of Lagos as the hub of aviation business in Nigeria. The move is described as an administrative decision to align FAAN with the industry it regulates, with the assurance that FAAN will maintain some presence in Abuja.

He said, “There are many parastatals that are not based in Abuja, depending on their mandate. NIMASA is in Lagos. So is NPA. The National Inland Waterways Authority( NIWA) is in Lokoja, not Abuja.

“Will the people opposing the movement of FAAN and some CBN departments want those agencies to be in Abuja, where there is no single port and no maritime activity?”

He called for an end to what he termed “dirty politics,” urging a cessation of political maneuvering that distracts from the broader national agenda.
