As reactions continue to trail the death of Nigerian rapper and singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the Lagos Commissioner of Police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the singer.
It will be recalled that Mohbad was said to have been rushed to a hospital but died some hours after complaining of illness. He died at 27.
His fans started raising questions on social media platforms a day after his death, wondering how he could have died mysteriously barely 24 hours after he had performed at a show in Ikorodu, Lagos State where he didn’t show any sign of illness or weakness.
Some of his fans and colleagues, who reacted to his death, lamented that “The Feel Good” crooner and father of one may not have died if his former record label boss, Naira Marley, had not allegedly forced him out from the label and left him with no choice but to survive on his own.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Saturday, said the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, has been asked to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death.
Adejobi, who appealed to Mohbad’s fans and colleagues to allow the police to carry out their investigation, noted that the IGP and CP in Lagos deliberated on the death of Mohbad at the Police Airwing, Muritala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos on Saturday.
He stated that the IGP has directed the Lagos Police boss to deploy the command’s resources to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Owohunwa on Saturday evening directed the commencement of a full-scale criminal investigation into the case.
To this end, he has constituted a special investigation team within the homicide section of the State Criminal and Investigations Department (SCID) to coordinate the investigation.
The team, which comprises seasoned homicide detectives, has been tasked to aggregate all allegations, suspicions and insinuations from various sources on the death of the singer and undertake a professional, diligent and timely investigation.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, this is with a view to establishing facts, clearing all doubts and ensuring that justice is manifestly served through a meticulous process that will deploy all requisite protocols as well as technical and scientific tools that are vital to the detailed investigation of homicide allegations of this nature.
“In aid of this initiative, the Lagos State government has pledged its total support to the Special Investigation Team in all ways required to guarantee a diligent investigative exercise.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave this assurance while consulting with the State Commissioner of Police earlier on Saturday on how best to ensure that the case is expeditiously investigated and justice delivered promptly,” the statement added.
The management of late rapper has vowed to continue the fight to retrieve the singer’s catalogue and unpaid royalties from his former record label, Martian Music.
The management said this in a statement posted on Mohbad’s verified instagram account, @iammohbad, on Saturday, said “Right now, we are focused on making sure the legacy of Mohbad lives on and he is remembered as he was in his final months; free, strong and fighting for his future”.
