Chelsea, Liverpool share the spoils at Stamford Bridge

963
Two teams with disappointing campaigns last season started the new season with the same old story between them.

Chelsea going up against Liverpool was the headline game for week one.

Liverpool’s early dominance paid off with Luis Diaz opening the scoring after a sublime pass from the Egyptian Mo’Salah, albeit the lead didn’t last overly long as Axel Disasi levelled on his debut.

Disasi after the game said: “Chilly [Ben Chilwell] yesterday he told me that I will score today so I’m very happy, very proud of the team because in the second half we played good football and I think we deserved to win.”

Jurgen Klopp line up was a bold statement — Diogo Jota, Salah, Cody Gakpo and Diaz —  form the attacking four looking to take advantage of the wide areas in Pochettino’s 3-5-2, and new signings Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, providing shield for the defence and a major propeller for Liverpool going forward.

Mac Allister put in an amazing shift in his midfield duties and he won possession more times (10), won more duels (7) than any Liverpool player, he also won more possession in the final third than any player on the pitch.

Players are never at peak fitness at this stage of the season, but that wasn’t the case for Enzo Fernandez, who bossed the midfield he played more passes into the final third and more passes into the opposition box than any other player on the pitch.

Liverpool had not managed another shot on target in all the time since Diaz’s goal, that said everything for the way Chelsea had managed to find a way into the game, unsettling Salah from the flank, and  Chilwell giving the order to stop Arnold from pulling the strings in midfield.

The last seven meetings between these two teams have ended in draws with both scoring four goals each and keeping seven clean sheets in that process.
