The Nigeria Basketball Federation board elections slated for Thursday, October 15, remain cleared to proceed following the Federal High Court in Abuja’s refusal to grant an injunction halting the poll pending ongoing litigation.
The lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/2428), instituted by Ayodele Olaseinde Bakare against the NBBF and the National Sports Commission, seeks to overturn the elective congress conducted in Yola, Adamawa State, on grounds of unlawfulness.
Bakare alleged that the Yola gathering breached provisions of the NBBF Constitution and sought an order to freeze the electoral process pending full determination of his suit, the court refused that request.
Hearing of the substantive matter is now fixed for November 3, 2026.
PerSecondNews reports that the core dispute centres on the procedure used to convene the congress and whether it complied with the federation’s rules.
The refusal to stop the election does not settle the allegations against the NBBF. Those issues remain open before the court as the federation elects a new board amid the challenge.
The outcome could affect leadership and administration of Nigerian basketball.
The NBBF and NSC are the respondents, with Thursday’s vote set to choose the next leadership.
