Resident doctors at Lagos hospital protest female colleague’s death in faulty elevator

Resident doctors at the General Hospital, Odan on Lagos Island on Wednesday protested the death of their female colleague, Dr. Vwaere Diaso, in a faulty elevator at the 10-floor health facility.

Diaso died on Tuesday at the hospital after an elevator she took crashed from the 10th floor to ground zero, Persecondnews reports.

She was, however, rushed to the emergency ward of the hospital for possible resuscitation but to no avail.

It was learned that the elevator had been malfunctioning and gone bad for some months without any effort by the management of the hospital to fix it.

“On multiple occasions, the elevator has stopped while we were inside and there is no maintenance,” a doctor said.

“We report every time about the problem. The elevator is supposed to carry 630kg maximum, that’s eight people,” he added.

According to him, since the elevator started malfunctioning, the staff of the hospital started reducing the number of people in it every time to avoid congestion.

“Once you open the elevator and see two people already, you just have to wait for the next batch. It was faulty and they knew about it. That’s why we are not going to take this.”

In a video shared on Twitter, House officers could be seen marching outside the hospital building chanting “All we are saying, give us justice”, with placards carrying messages such as, “It could have been me” and “The system is rigged against young doctors”.

Persecondnews gathered that the late Diaso had just two weeks to complete her housemanship before the tragic incident happened.
