AMVCA: Knocks, mixed reactions for organisers over “Best Actor Award” won by Tobi Bakre

Reactions have continued to trail the Best Actor Award won by reality star turned actor, Tobi Bakre, at the just concluded African Magic Viewer’s Choice Award (AMVCA) held on Saturday, May 20 in Lagos.

With many actors and actresses including comedians and skit makers turning up in style to steal the show and register their names as best dressed at the event, the award night has been dominating discussions on social media platforms.

For many of the nominees and guests, it was a night filled with witty remarks, surprising wins and jaw-dropping fashion just as ‘Aníkúlápó’ took home most awards at the ninth edition of the award including Best Overall Movie.

However, the organisers of the event have come under attacks from different parts of the country mainly for the most popular category — Best Actor — which was won by Bakre as against the expectations of many who felt Adebayo deserved the award.

Bakre won the Best Actor for his role in the Jade Osiberu movie ‘Brotherhood.’ It was his first AMVCA and the excited actor could not hide his joy on stage, displaying a gamut of emotions that ranged from surprise, excitement to pride.

Tobi was nominated alongside Blossom Chukwujekwu for “The Trade,” Chidi Mokeme for “Shanty Town,” Chimezie Imo for “Choke,” Daniel Etim-Effiong for “Kofa,” Femi Adebayo for “King of Thieves (Agesinkole),” NKakalukanyi Patriq for “Tembele,” O.C. Ukeje for “Black Mail,” Richard Mofe Damijo for “Four Four Forty Four,” and Tope Tedela for “All The Colours Of The World Are Between Black and White.”

However, some people disagreed with organisers for the keenly contested category as they took to social media platforms to express their concerns about how Bakre could win over Adebayo whose role in his movie, King of Thieves (Agesinkole).

A Twitter user said AMVCA has been reduced to a clown show.

“It looks like it is more of a popularity contest than an event for rewarding excellence!!! Tobi had a good year but there is no way he performed better than Chidi in shanty town or Femi Adebayo in King of Thieves.”

While the winner was determined by who polled the highest votes, some people submitted that the organisers shouldn’t have taken the decision by voting alone but by other ratings among other considerations.

Osas Ighodaro wins again:

For the second time, Osas Ighodaro took home the award for Best Actress for her portrayal as the wife of a cleric who has his own demons to battle with in the Bolanle Austen-Peters movie ‘Man of God.’

Though one of the nominees in her category Nse Ikpe-Etim, raised some eyebrows with her reaction to not winning the Best Actress in a Drama Movie or TV Series award for which she had been nominated for her resilient character in Shanty Town, a Netflix Original series.

She was nominated alongside Shanty Town co-star, Ini Edo, as well as Enado Odigie (Flawsome), Immaculata Oko-Kasum (Ile Owo), Ini Dima-Okojie (Flawsome), Queen Nwokoye (Strained), Scarlet Gomez (Wura), and Nimo Loveline (The Planters Plantation).

Bimbo Ademoye was a strong favourite for the category for her starring role in Anikulapo, but it was Osas Ighodaro who walked away with the trophy for the night for Man of God, another Netflix project.

Minutes after Osas gave her speech on the big stage, Ikpe-Etim tweeted a single laugh emoji which generated the kind of reaction you would expect online.

Patience Ozokwor’s day of glory:

Much to the admiration of the crowd, the coveted Industry Merit Award of this year found its rightful place in the hands of veteran actress, Patience Ozokwor, also known as Mama G.

A surge of admiration swept through the audience, as she received an exhilarating standing ovation.

Overwhelmed by the profound significance of the moment, Ozokwor’s heart swelled with emotion, and she found solace in expressing her gratitude to the Most High.

In a tender exchange with one passionate supporter who proclaimed their adoration, Patience Ozokwor’s voice rang out, carrying a profound depth of devotion, “You can’t even stop loving me. I will die for your love,” she said.

Kunle Afolayan wins 4 awards out of 11 nominations

With the Netflix original produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan, leading this year AMVCA with 16 nominations, it came down to the Best Overall Picture to take the lead over ‘Brotherhood’ which won four awards out of its 11 nominations.

Afolayan, in his acceptance speech of the Best Overall Movie award, acknowledged veteran cinematographer, Tunde Kelani, for mentoring him in the art and science of filmmaking.
Broda Shaggi wins Best Actor in Comedy

Content creator and actor, Broda Shaggi emerged winner in the category of ‘Best Actor in a comedy’ with Kayode Kasum’s DWINDLE.

While receiving his award, Shaggi appreciated the members of the cast and crew of DWINDLE as he dedicated it to his fans for their unwavering support over the years.

Being a win from his first ever nomination, he beat actors Shawn Faqua, Deyemi Okanlawon, Gideon Okeke, Femi Adebayo, Williams Uchemba and Timini Egbuson to clinch the award gallantly.
