Presidential candidates and party chairmen of the various political parties on Thursday signed a peace accord at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Persecondnews gathered that the major contenders including Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), and Rabiu Kwankwaso (NNPP) were present for the signing of the peace deal, while the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC), Bola Tinubu, who was conspicuously absent, was represented by his running mate, Sen. Kashim Shettima.

Also present were Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC), and APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu.

Persecondnews reports that the peace accord is organised by the National Peace Committee headed by a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, with Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah as the deputy.

The initiative was conceived in 2014 in response to emerging threats occasioned by the 2015 general elections.

For the first time in the annals of Nigeria, a sitting president, Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP lost re-election to current President Muhammadu Buhari.

As a man of peace and to avert a national bloodbaths, Jonathan demonstrated maturity by admitting defeat and calling Buhari to congratulate him even before the results were announced by the nation’s electoral body.

A gesture that received national and worldwide accolades and endorsement.
