Osinbajo, Gowon, Jonathan, governors bid ex-Nigerian leader, Shonekan, farewell in Lagos

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) on Friday led Nigerians from all walks of life including former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, some governors and ministers to bid the late Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, farewell.

 

At a funeral service at the Cathedral Church of Christ (Anglican Communion),  Marina on Lagos island, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Archbishop Peter Akinola and other bishops and retired bishops presided.

 

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, Governors of Lagos, Ogun, Edo, former governors, ministers are among dignitaries at the state funeral.

 

Osinbajo said that the late Shonekan lived an extraordinary life, adding that he had respect for all and there was a way he carried himself through life.

 

Osinbajo also described him as a man of destiny just like Nigeria is a nation of destiny.

 

As usual, Osinbajo recalled the many quotes of the deceased, including, “If your country needs you, give everything and go and help”.

“Chief Shonekan lived an extraordinary life. There was a way he carried himself through life. He had respect for all. If your country needs you, give everything and go and help. Chief Shonekan lived his life always conscious.

 

“He lived a life lesson for a nation. He is a man of destiny just like Nigeria is a nation of destiny. He believes that national development is achievable if there is a deep collaboration between the public and private sector.

“I extend sincere condolences to his immediate family. Thank you for giving him room to serve this nation and humanity at large,” the Vice-President said.

 

Persecondnews reports that Shonekan, GCFR, who hailed from Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, died at the age of 85 and was buried in Lagos with full military honours as a former Nigerian leader.
