If you listen to President Muhammadu Buhari’s words about the security situation in the country, he seems to understand it’s an emergency. He declared it as one. He has promised that he will do something about it —he said that the country’s security challenges are surmountable and that insecurity will soon be a thing of the past.
If you look at Buhari’s actions, well, it’s a very different story. There has been no move by Buhari’s administration to actually deal with the insecurity, says opposition leader Abubakar Atiku.
” When I was a child, Nigeria had little crime did not depend on police from Lagos or Kaduna. We had a community police system, Atiku said Monday on his twitter page.
” Nigeria must return to community policing, adapted to suit the culture and history of each of the 6 zones, in order to stem the tide of insecurity.
“Our response to the killings of our citizens cannot be just talk, talk, and talk.”
” We must take decisive action to protect the lives of all citizens, not just prominent ones. There has to be change, because if we continue with the way things are, we will get the same results, he said.
The administration has done very little to combat the insecurity issues to date, he wrote.
Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, also over the week-end said the problems confronting Nigeria are beyond President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
