The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has proposed the establishment of a NISO State Technical Working Group to improve coordination between state electricity markets and the national grid under the Electricity Act 2023.
NISO Managing Director/CEO o, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, made the proposal on Thursday at the National Workshop on the Electricity Act 2023, held at the State House Auditorium, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Mohammed also proposed an annual energy planning summit involving NISO and state governments to assess available energy resources and forecast electricity demand.

He said stronger coordination between the states and the national grid would require harmonised technical standards, improved data sharing and effective engagement among stakeholders.
Other proposals include developing a national framework for coordinating state electricity markets, institutionalising integrated energy planning and adopting a phased roadmap for implementation.
Mohammed said the objective was not to centralise electricity markets but to ensure that state markets operated in coordination with one another and the interconnected national grid.
The proposed measures are aimed at supporting the development of an integrated electricity market under the Electricity Act 2023, which provides a framework for greater state participation in electricity regulation and market development.
