In a major legal victory against transnational drug cartels, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has secured a 40-year prison sentence for a 38-year-old South African woman caught smuggling 5.75kg of heroin into Nigeria.
The conviction details were confirmed in an official statement released on Thursday by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi emailed to PerSecondNews on Thursday.
PerSecondNews recalls that Jessica Ann was intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, after 14 large blocks of heroin weighing 5.75kg were found hidden in her luggage.
The 38-year-old reportedly travelled with her three-year-old son, using the child as a cover in an attempt to evade thorough security checks and screening at the airport.
Her ploy was uncovered on Monday, July 6, 2026, during the inward clearance of passengers aboard Qatar Airways flight QR 1433 from Doha to Abuja, when NDLEA officers subjected her luggage to further checks.
The suspect initially denied travelling with check-in bags, but operatives established that the tags on two bags containing the drugs tallied with the claim tags attached to her passport.
She subsequently admitted ownership of the bags, claiming that she had forgotten she checked in the two pieces of luggage.
Investigators established that Jessica Ann had travelled from Cambodia through Doha to Abuja, with NDLEA intelligence linking her to a transnational drug trafficking network.
The agency noted that she operated along the Cambodian-South African trafficking route with her husband/partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager, based in Cambodia.
De Jager was also arrested in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 27, 2026, while attempting to traffic 3.2kg of illicit drugs to Hong Kong.
Following her arrest, Jessica Ann was arraigned on a two-count charge in suit FHC/ABJ/CR/422/2026 for importing 5.75kg of heroin and conspiring to import the same quantity into Nigeria.
She pleaded guilty to both counts before Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
In his judgment delivered on Thursday, September 17, 2026, Justice Egwuatu imposed a 15-year prison term on Jessica Ann for count one and another 25 years for count two, bringing the total sentence to 40 years.
The two terms are to run concurrently.
Reacting to the ruling, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa described the judgement as a firm demonstration of the resolve of the Nigerian judiciary to support the Agency’s war against drug trafficking.
According to Marwa, the judgement would serve as a strong deterrent to transnational drug cartels seeking to use Nigeria as a transit or destination point for hard drugs.
He described the case as one which reinforces the agency’s long-standing position that Nigeria will not serve as a soft landing for international drug cartels.
The NDLEA chairman maintained that the arrest of the convict’s husband in South Africa barely three weeks later, while attempting a separate trafficking operation to Hong Kong, was clear evidence of the strength of intelligence-sharing and collaboration between the agency and its international partners.
“The swift dispensation of justice in the matter, from arrest to conviction, reflected the effectiveness of NDLEA’s operations and its close working relationship with the Federal High Court,” he noted.
Marwa said the agency would intensify airport interdiction, intelligence-driven operations and cooperation with international partners to disrupt transnational drug networks using Nigeria as a trafficking corridor.
He stressed that nationality would not shield anyone caught trafficking illicit drugs through Nigeria, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
