She built a public profile investigating crime and security on Egyptian television. Now, 39-year-old Sarah Khalifa has been sentenced to death by hanging after being convicted in a major synthetic drug trafficking case.
An Egyptian court in Cairo sentenced Khalifa alongside 11 other defendants after prosecutors accused them of operating a criminal network involved in importing raw materials used to manufacture synthetic narcotics.
The case has transformed the public image of the popular television presenter, who was known for hosting Mission Impossible, a crime and security programme on Egypt’s private Al-Mehwar channel.
Persecondnews gathered that the court also convicted the defendants of offences involving the manufacture and trafficking of synthetic drugs, as well as the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The prosecution’s case centred on an alleged organised operation in which raw chemical materials were brought into Egypt and subsequently processed into synthetic narcotics.
Who is Sarah Khalifa?
Before becoming the face of one of Egypt’s crime-focused television programmes, Khalifa established herself as a media personality and entrepreneur.
She became widely known through Mission Impossible, where she presented stories involving crime and security.
Away from television, she has business interests that reportedly include a cosmetic surgery clinic and an event production company.
She also commands a substantial social media following, with more than 2.5 million followers on Instagram.
That public profile has made her conviction particularly striking.
The woman who built part of her television career around crime-related stories is now at the centre of one of Egypt’s most closely watched criminal cases.
What prosecutors say happened
According to the prosecution’s case, Khalifa and her co-defendants were involved in a criminal enterprise that allegedly imported raw chemicals and established apartment-based laboratories for manufacturing synthetic drugs.
Authorities reportedly seized more than 750 kilogrammes of drugs and drug-manufacturing materials during investigations into the alleged operation.
Prosecutors also accused members of the group of possessing firearms and ammunition without the necessary licences.
The scale of the alleged operation was one of the factors that placed the case among the more serious drug prosecutions before the Egyptian courts.
12 sentenced To Death
Khalifa was not the only defendant handed the ultimate punishment.
The court sentenced 11 other defendants, including Khalifa’s brother, to death.
Another nine defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, while seven people were acquitted.
The varying sentences indicate that the court distinguished between the roles and evidence relating to the different defendants.
Khalifa, however, has consistently rejected the allegations against her.
Khalifa Denies involvement
During proceedings, the television presenter strongly denied having any involvement with drugs.
She reportedly told the court that she had never been involved in the drug trade and questioned why she would need money from such an activity given her existing businesses and income.
Her defence has maintained that the allegations against her are unfounded.
Her lawyer, Mohamed El-Gendy, has announced that the defence will appeal the death sentence.
Why the Death Sentence Is Not Yet The End
Despite the dramatic verdict, Khalifa’s case is not necessarily over.
Under Egyptian law, death sentences are referred to the country’s Grand Mufti, whose opinion is sought before the sentence can be formally confirmed.
The court confirmed the death sentences after receiving the Mufti’s response.
The defence can now challenge the verdict before a higher criminal court and potentially before Egypt’s Court of Cassation.
That process could ultimately result in the sentence being upheld, reduced or overturned.
A television presenter now facing the ultimate punishment
The case has created an extraordinary contrast in Khalifa’s public life.
She was known to millions as a television presenter associated with crime and security reporting.
She is now herself the subject of a criminal case involving allegations of organised drug manufacturing and trafficking.
But the conviction is not the final word.
Khalifa continues to deny the charges, while her lawyers prepare to challenge the verdict.
