Tinubu Approves 29 Brigade To Strengthen Security In Kwara, Niger

The recent kidnappings that left families in four communities across Kwara and Niger States living in fear have triggered a stronger security response, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approving a new 29 Brigade for the states.

The brigade, to be located at Kainji-New Bussa under 9 Division, Ilorin, will cover Kwara and Niger States, strengthening security operations in the strategic border communities.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said on Sunday that the approval came against the backdrop of recent abductions in Woro, Konkonso, Pisa and Kasuwan Daji, according to a statement obtained by Persecondnews.

“The safe return of our brothers and sisters from Woro, Konkonso, Pisa and Kasuwan Daji is proof that when government and security agencies work together with communities, criminality will not prevail,” he said.

The minister said the affected communities in Kaiama, Kwara State, and Borgu, Niger State, share deep ancestral, cultural, social and economic ties, making security in the area important to residents on both sides of the border.

He said the new brigade would consolidate security authority in the area and strengthen the capacity of security agencies to respond to threats with greater coordination and effectiveness.

“Mr. President, you also approved a new 29 Brigade, Kainji-New Bussa, under 9 Division, Ilorin, covering Kwara and Niger States, thereby strengthening our capacity to tackle security challenges with the required tact and gallantry.”

The new formation is expected to reinforce existing security operations in the area, while Operation Savannah Shield is also being used to cover spaces exploited by criminal elements.

Abdullahi commended President Tinubu for his personal concern, directives to security agencies and commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind, saying the Renewed Hope agenda was being felt in rural communities.

He also commended Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for their prompt intervention, logistics support for security operations and continued engagement with community leaders.

He added: “Thank you also for aiding and strengthening this by Operation Savannah Shield, designed to cover the spaces used by these criminals. We are truly grateful.”

Abdullahi further thanked the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, other Service Chiefs and security agencies for their bravery, professionalism and sacrifices in securing the kidnapped residents without further harm.

He said the victims were released through coordinated efforts involving the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, DSS and local vigilante groups, under the directive and support of the Presidency and the Niger and Kwara State Governments.

“Your efforts have restored hope, peace and confidence among our people. We also appreciate the traditional rulers, religious leaders, and all citizens who prayed and supported us during this difficult period.”

The minister noted that the communities would continue cooperating with government and security agencies by providing timely information and supporting initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace and security.

He urged sustained collaboration among residents, traditional and religious leaders, government authorities and security agencies across Kaiama, Borgu and other border communities.

Persecondnews recalls that parts of Kwara State erupted in celebration after 176 abducted residents of Woro in Kaiama LGA regained their freedom last week following five months in captivity, with a motorcade conveying the victims from Wawa in Niger State toward Woro.
