INEC Assures Votes Will Count in 2027, Confirms Election Schedule

For millions of Nigerians preparing to vote in the 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured them that every valid vote cast will count and be reflected in the final election results.

The assurance came on Friday as INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, alongside National Commissioners, Directors, and Technical Aides, visited former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retired) in Minna, Niger State.

Amupitan said the Commission would remain focused on protecting the choices made by voters, despite the pressures that often accompany elections, adding that restoring public confidence remains central to INEC’s preparations for 2027.

“Our determination is to ensure ordinary Nigerians go out and vote, confident that their votes will be duly counted and reflected in the outcome of the election. That is the assurance we owe the electorate,” he told his host.

The INEC Chairman also confirmed the election timetable, announcing that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on January 16, 2027, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

In his response, Gen. Abubakar urged Nigerians and political stakeholders to support the electoral body, stressing that the country’s democracy depends on public confidence in the Commission and its ability to conduct credible elections.

“The success of our democracy depends on the cooperation and confidence extended to INEC by Nigerians and political stakeholders. Remain firm, impartial and committed to your constitutional responsibility,” he said.

Abdulsalami also pledged his continued support and prayers for the Commission as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.

As part of his visit to Niger State, the INEC Chairman also met with staff of the Commission, urging them to uphold the highest standards in carrying out their duties, saying their actions will influence how Nigerians perceive the electoral process.

He also announced that the Commission has begun reviewing staff welfare packages, describing improved working conditions as essential to boosting morale and strengthening preparations for the 2027 general elections.
