A proposed migration agreement between Nigeria and Germany could create legal pathways for skilled Nigerians to work in Germany, as both countries moved to deepen cooperation across key sectors.
The proposal featured during talks in Berlin after Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Ita Solomon Enang, presented his Letters of Credence to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Palace.
Persecondnews obtained the details of the meeting in an email sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa Imomotimi, on Friday.
According to the ministry, Amb. Enang attended the ceremony with Deputy Head of Mission, Mohammed Bashir Basha, and Head of Chancery, Dr. Chioma Aisha Okorie-Haidara.
Both countries reaffirmed their longstanding partnership and pledged to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, migration and sustainable development.
The proposed migration agreement aims to create legal pathways for skilled Nigerians in healthcare, technology, engineering, artificial intelligence and other sectors critical to Germany’s economy.
The discussions also covered economic and trade relations, power infrastructure, the Siemens Power Initiative, off-grid technologies and stronger cooperation on migration and consular matters.
President Steinmeier and Amb. Enang also explored increased German investment in Nigeria’s automobile assembly, industrial development, technology transfer and gas utilisation projects.
Accordingly, the gas projects are expected to convert flared gas into electricity while supporting Nigeria’s industrial growth and improving access to reliable power.
The talks also focused on regional peace and security, Nigeria’s leadership role in ECOWAS and renewed engagement with Sahelian states.
Both sides further reviewed Germany’s support for implementing the Green Tree Agreement following the International Court of Justice judgment on the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary and humanitarian issues affecting the Bakassi Peninsula.
On his part, Amb. Enang also conveyed Nigeria’s appreciation for Germany’s humanitarian assistance announced during German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul’s recent visit to Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
The engagement further reinforces the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Germany and reaffirms the commitment of both countries to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, migration, regional security and sustainable development.
