Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Orders Disu to Take Charge Immediately

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police and officially approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General with immediate effect.

A senior presidency source confirmed on Tuesday that Egbetokun had stepped down, confirming his resignation.

The appointment signals an immediate leadership transition at the Nigeria Police Force, with further details on the handover expected.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, on the President official X account said he accepted Egbetokun’s resignation following a letter referencing “pressing family considerations.”

“I thank him for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and our nation,” the President said.

“His dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening our internal security architecture are deeply appreciated.”

Announcing the new appointment, Tinubu said:”In view of the current security challenges and in accordance with extant laws, I have approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.”

He expressed confidence in Disu’s leadership capacity, noting that his experience and operational depth would provide steady direction for the Force.

The President also confirmed that, in line with the Police Act 2020, the Nigeria Police Council will be convened to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General before his name is transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

“Our administration remains unwavering in its commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force is professional, accountable and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities,” the President added.

The leadership change comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen internal security coordination.
