Wilfred Ndidi, captain of the Super Eagles, is facing a personal tragedy after his father, Sunday Ndidi, passed away following a fatal road accident in Delta State.
The retired military officer was involved in the accident in Umunede and was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Agbor.
Ndidi’s club, Besiktas, confirmed the incident, expressing their condolences to the player and his family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” the club said in a statement.
“May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones”.

The news comes just weeks after Ndidi led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
During the tournament, he scored his first international goal against Tunisia and dedicated the celebration to his father, referencing his admiration for former Nigeria captain Kanu Nwankwo.
“The celebration came from my dad because he was always talking about Kanu Nwankwo,” Ndidi said.
“So I just thought about my dad. I had seen the video before, but it came to my head, and I said I was going to do it for my dad”.
Ndidi has often spoken about growing up with his father in the barracks, and his father’s influence on his football career.
The Nigeria Football Federation has also expressed its condolences to Ndidi and his family.
