President Bola Tinubu has nominated Gen. Christopher Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, as the new Minister of Defence, replacing ex-Jigawa Gov. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned on Monday due to health issues.
Gen. Musa, 58, is a highly decorated soldier with a distinguished career spanning over three decades.
A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Musa was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991 and went on to hold several key positions, including General Staff Officer 1, Training/Operations at HQ 81 Division, and Commander of Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole.
He also served as Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, and Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps before becoming Chief of Defence Staff in 2023.
Musa is a recipient of the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering, which he won in 2012. President Tinubu expressed confidence in General Musa’s ability to lead the Ministry of Defence and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture
The nomination of Musa is subject to confirmation by the Senate.
Given his significant experience and proven leadership skills, it is widely anticipated that his appointment will strengthen and enhance Nigeria’s security architecture.
