Following the tragic drowning of 28 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, the Federal Government has renewed its stern warning against irregular migration through the Sahara Desert and dangerous maritime routes.

The advisory followed a meeting in Abuja between Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa and George Emmanuel, a survivor of the deadly journey.

Reliving the ordeal, Emmanuel detailed the extreme perils of the desert crossing and the horrific moment their vessel capsized in the Mediterranean, claiming nearly 30 lives.

Ebienfa commended Emmanuel for using his experience to campaign against illegal migration and discourage others from attempting dangerous journeys through the Sahara Desert or crossing the Mediterranean in unsafe boats.

The ministry said the Federal Government remains deeply concerned about the growing human cost of irregular migration, with many migrants dying or suffering exploitation by traffickers and smugglers.

It said many also endure harsh desert conditions, detention and abuse in transit countries, while others perish attempting dangerous Mediterranean crossings.

According to the ministry, Nigeria is tackling the root causes of irregular migration by expanding economic opportunities, strengthening border management and intensifying efforts against human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks.

It added that the government is promoting safe, orderly and regular migration pathways through partnerships with destination and transit countries, as well as international organisations.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to voluntary return, protection, psychosocial care and sustainable reintegration for distressed Nigerians abroad, noting that diplomatic missions continue providing consular assistance to citizens in need.

Ebienfa commened Emmanuel for sharing his experience and wished him a full recovery, while urging Nigerians, especially young people, to reject the false promises of irregular migration that often end in tragedy.
