Goodness Nwachukwu smashed her own world record with a stunning 39.66m throw to claim gold for Nigeria in the
Women’s Discus at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, capping a memorable day for Team Nigeria.
The throw came in the final round of the F42-44/F61-64 event, improving her previous F42 mark by more than three metres, sealing the Commonwealth title.
Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye took silver with 38.52m while compatriot Bree Cronin claimed bronze on 36.00m.
Nigeria’s medal tally grew further when 19-year-old Jessica Oji produced a best effort of 17.87m to win silver in the women’s shot put on her first major international appearance for the country.
On the track, Commonwealth champion Ezekiel Nathaniel underlined his credentials by winning Heat Two of the men’s 400m hurdles in 48.69 seconds, the fastest time of the round.
He finished ahead of England’s Jake Minshull (48.88s) and India’s Santhosh Tamilarasan (49.51s) to secure a place in the final as the overall top qualifier.
In boxing, Blessing Orakwe’s run in the women’s 70kg division ended in the quarter-finals after a narrow 3-2 split decision defeat to Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti, despite winning two of the five judges’ scorecards.
With more finals on the horizon, Team Nigeria is fueling a standout campaign—stacked with medals, shattered records, and dominant performances that solidify its standing among the Commonwealth’s elite.
